Bell Murphy I Aotearoa, New Zealand
Trauma-Informed teaching practices in Aotearoa
Creating learning environments that are as safe as possible for trauma survivors is a priority for ESD teachers. In this presentation we explore five key aspects of trauma sensitivity in ESD classes, based on our research and experience teaching ESD in Aotearoa (New Zealand): content forecasting, discussing the impacts of trauma, modelling/establishing consent, grounding exercises and providing emotional support. We also discuss how trauma sensitivity can be achieved and enhanced through a Kaupapa Māori approach to ESD (one based on indigenous values, principles and world views). To illustrate these practices we draw on multiple forms of data: video extracts collected as part of the research project Using Talk and the Body to Prevent Gender-based Violence, interviews with other ESD teachers conducted as part of Bell’s doctoral research, and stories from our own teaching experience working with survivors. We will also invite discussion from other ESD teachers present about their reflections and experiences working with survivors in different cultural contexts.
Bell Murphy is an accredited member of Kia Haumaru—Personal Safety Education, Aotearoa New Zealand’s national ESD network which has been running for 35 years. Within the network, she has been teaching ESD since 2013, is a member of the national board and of the teacher training team. She has been researching ESD since 2016 through the Gender Studies Doctoral Programme at the University of Otago, her research seeks to illuminate the meaning of empowerment in the context of ESD programmes in Aotearoa/New Zealand. This terrain is explored theoretically (through critical pedagogy, feminist theory and political philosophy) and empirically through her experience as a teacher, thematic analysis of interviews with other teachers and observations of ESD classes. She is also coprincipal investigator on the research project Using Talk and the Body to Prevent Gender-based Violence, a video study of ESD classes based at Victoria University Wellington’s School of Psychology.

Nguyen Phuong Vy I Vietnam
From Safety to Strength: Applying ESD Across Communities at Risk
In this presentation I will focus on how I apply Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) in my work as a social worker. I will share experiences of adapting ESD methods for different vulnerable groups, including university students, social activists, factory workers, women conservationists, and survivors of gender-based violence. What makes this work special is how we continuously modify the ESD approach to suit the emotional, cultural, and social needs of each group. I also integrate storytelling and reflective practices to help participants not only learn self-defense but also rediscover their voice and agency.
Vy is currently in charge of training at the Center for Studies and Applied Sciences in Gender, Family, Women, and Adolescents (CSAGA). She has been working at CSAGA since 2004, when she had just graduated from high school and started as a part-time staff member. Over the years, she has taken on various roles such as project officer, communications officer, and project manager. The more she worked, the more she realized that her commitment to the field stemmed not only from professional responsibility, but also from a deep personal passion and concern.

Petra Carman I Slovenia/Thailand
Teaching ESD Across Divides: Lessons from Mixed-Gender Groups
In this session, Petra shares reflections from teaching Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) in diverse cultural contexts across Asia. While she has experience facilitating groups that vary widely in age, background, and ability, this talk focuses specifically on the dynamics of gender diversity. Drawing on work with mixed-gender groups aged 18 to 70, she explores how ESD can open up space for systemic reflection—on gender roles, the impact of patriarchy on all genders, and the importance of listening across divides. Petra will touch on approaches that help learners feel safe and engaged, including the value of gender-specific sharing. The session invites honest conversation and more inclusive ways of holding space for empowerment.
Petra Carman, PhD, is a social psychologist and facilitator with a background in criminal justice and security, and a lifelong passion for empowerment and engaged spirituality. A former martial arts practitioner (Taekwondo and Kung Fu), she now works at the intersection of social change, embodiment, and alternative education. She completed her Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) teacher training in 2022 and has since taught ESD in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Slovenia, supporting learners of different ages, cultural backgrounds, and ability levels.
